Getty Research Institute Appoints Mary Miller As Director
Mary Miller has been tapped as the new director of the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, succeeding Thomas Gaehtgens, who will be retiring at the end of this year.
Miller, an art historian, has previously served as the first female dean of Yale College, and is currently director of the Yale Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage, and the university’s Sterling Professor of the History of Art. She has published various writings, including Blood of Kings, which she wrote with Linda Schele, as well as several other books on art of the ancient New World, a topic in which she specializes.
Miller will begin her work with the Getty Research Institute in January 2019. In a statement, Miller said, “The GRI directorship is an incredible opportunity for me, and I am so excited about the resources the Getty Research Institute provides for research in the history of art, archaeology, and related humanistic disciplines, from the on-site library to massive archives that attest to the human imagination on the visual plane.”
