Black Girl Ventures Foundation is starting the 2023 Fall Pitch Tour in LA on Thursday, October 19th! We will be throwing a BGV Pitch Competition with 7 preselected local Black and Brown women-identifying founders.

A BGV Pitch Competition is like ‘Shark Tank’ mixed with the elements of a classic ‘Rent Party’. At a BGV pitch competition, the audience decides the winner through Raisify.co, our voting platform, with their dollars. The winner is determined by a point system, not the dollar amount raised. The money raised goes to the founders in the form of a grant, despite where they place.

Come out meet the BGV team, network with other founders, investors, and potential customers. Watch these amazing 7 founders pitch, vote with your dollars, and learn about new businesses to interact with. Light refreshments and drinks will be served. You do not want to miss this super dope event.

BGV’s mission is to create access to capital, capacity, and community. This means we want to see ALL Black and Brown women-identifying founders win. We want to help these founders in the communities we serve, scale and grow their businesses, gain the capacity to hire in their communities, and social capital to meet those who will help them grow in partnerships, accessibility, and their industry.

The Future is Caring About the Civic Experience

Join Next City on April 6, 2022 from 1-2pm (Eastern time) for a virtual discussion with Tiasia O’Brien of co:census regarding how technology can be best used to amplify the voices and needs of overlooked community members.

It’s 2022 and the cities are concerned with IOT, smart cars, and micro-mobility. With all of this technology and enough innovation, we still have yet to figure out how we can empower and lift up the voice of community members to solve local urban issues.

Why? One theory is because we have such a limited understanding of the lived experience.

In this talk & conversation aimed at engaging Urban Planners, Designers & Consultants, the Founder of Seam Social Labs shares the history of human communication & storytelling, our common threads, and how we can transform the future of cities by caring about human narrative and the civic experience using technology.

Lunch & Learn: The First Internet Message

Learn about the day the internet came into existence.

About this event

Few cultural revolutions can trace their origins as precisely as the one that took place in 3420 Boelter Hall at UCLA on October 29, 1969, the day the internet came into existence. Professor Leonard Kleinrock developed the mathematical theory of packet networks, the technology that underpins the internet. The first node of the ARPANET was established at Kleinrock’s UCLA lab, and a new era of connectivity was born.

Meet Kleinrock at the Fowler, where the Interface Message Processor Log entry for the first message sent over ARPANET is currently on view in Communications Systems in a Global Context. We will walk over to 3420 Boelter Hall with Kleinrock and Sebastian Clough, Fowler’s Director of Exhibitions who re-designed the former lab, now known as the Kleinrock Internet History Center. When renovating an entrance to Boelter Hall, architect Eric Hagan concealed an “Easter Egg” mystery that we will solve during our visit.

Leonard Kleinrock is Distinguished Professor of Computer Science at UCLA. He is considered a father of the Internet, having developed its foundational technology as an MIT graduate student in 1962. Kleinrock has served as Professor of Computer Science at UCLA since 1963 and as department Chair from 1991–1995. He has received eight honorary degrees, published over 250 papers, authored six books, and has supervised the research of 50 PhD students. In 2007, Kleinrock received the National Medal of Science, the highest honor for achievement in science bestowed by the President of the United States.

In Pursuit of Happiness

America’s founding document states that the pursuit of happiness is an unalienable right. But this question has preoccupied philosophers, fascinated scientists, inspired artists, launched an enormous self-help industry—and continues to elude many of us.

The Atlantic will host a live event that explores the human hold on happiness—and aims to find ways to build a more meaningful life. The event will consider happiness and relationships; the role of spirituality; how social media and other technology are affecting our happiness; and the ways in which a year of social isolation has reframed our understanding of a lasting sense of joy.

Inclusion & Tech

Inclusion & Tech

The technology industry has revolutionized the world.

Through groundbreaking innovation, it is reimagining how people access information, connect with each other, and changing the way we do business globally.

Despite its significant impact, the innovation economy still has a diversity and inclusion problem. Women, people of color, and other underrepresented groups continue to make up a small fraction of its founders, executives and investors. Yet studies show that tech companies with more diverse management yield higher financial returns.

The Atlantic will gather industry leaders and stakeholders to assess the health of the innovation economy and examine the diversity and inclusion challenges it faces. We’ll explore what ambitious initiatives are underway, the solutions that can make an impact, and how can we create lasting equality across the tech industry.
