Urban and rural teens swap hometowns and are shocked by what they learn about each other

This summer a group of high school students brought a whole new meaning to foreign exchange programs.

Wendy Rojas of Koreatown immersed herself in Sioux Falls, S.D. Expecting to see Mt. Rushmore, she instead found herself setting the record straight about her hometown. No, she explained to locals, her neighborhood is not overrun with gangs and rife with gunfire like they’d seen in the movies.

Maggie Quine of Kilgore, Texas, was just as shocked with what she had to clarify to L.A. teens visiting her hometown. No, Texans don’t get around on horseback.

Homeless count finds fewer people living on L.A. streets

After climbing for the past five years, overall homelessness leveled off in Los Angeles city and county this year, with fewer people living on the streets, according to the annual count by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority.

The 2024 count appeared to show the effects of city and county programs to clear out encampments. LAHSA estimated that there were 75,312 homeless people across the county, down 0.3% compared to the prior year. In the city of Los Angeles, the number was 45,252, a reduction of 2.2%.

Design For Dignity: Making It Happen

We're thrilled to present this year's exceptional lineup of speakers at Design for Dignity. The focus this year will be “Making It Happen”.

Design for Dignity will serve as a forum to leverage the expertise of architects to achieve cost-containment, neighborhood engagement/ community buy-in, and insight about how to best overcome specific regulatory and procedural hurdles, hardships, and ‘red-tape’.

BGV Pitch Tour LA

  • 3402 Pico Boulevard Santa Monica, CA, 90405 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Black Girl Ventures Foundation is starting the 2023 Fall Pitch Tour in LA on Thursday, October 19th! We will be throwing a BGV Pitch Competition with 7 preselected local Black and Brown women-identifying founders.

A BGV Pitch Competition is like ‘Shark Tank’ mixed with the elements of a classic ‘Rent Party’. At a BGV pitch competition, the audience decides the winner through Raisify.co, our voting platform, with their dollars. The winner is determined by a point system, not the dollar amount raised. The money raised goes to the founders in the form of a grant, despite where they place.

Come out meet the BGV team, network with other founders, investors, and potential customers. Watch these amazing 7 founders pitch, vote with your dollars, and learn about new businesses to interact with. Light refreshments and drinks will be served. You do not want to miss this super dope event.

BGV’s mission is to create access to capital, capacity, and community. This means we want to see ALL Black and Brown women-identifying founders win. We want to help these founders in the communities we serve, scale and grow their businesses, gain the capacity to hire in their communities, and social capital to meet those who will help them grow in partnerships, accessibility, and their industry.

Sapling Adoption! - Tree People

We are excited to announce TreePeople’s yearly event to get your own tree sapling will take place on Friday, March 17th from 10am - 12pm!

This year we have a variety of large tree species available for adoption:

Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia)
Scrub Oak (Quercus berberidifolia)
Valley Oak (Quercus lobata)
Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia)
Southern Black Walnut (Juglans californica)

All of our trees are still saplings, which means they are young trees in small pots. Your sapling should be planted directly in the ground at least 40 feet from any other trees or structures and no overhead wires above. They should not be planted in pots. Instructions on how to plant your sapling will be provided at pick-up.

How to participate:

To reserve your sapling today, email Emily Andris at eandris@treepeople.org to schedule a pick-up time. Please choose from 10am - 11am or 11am - 12pm on Friday, March 17, 2023. Drop-ins will not be permitted.

The event will take place at our Coldwater Canyon Park at 12601 Mulholland Dr, Beverly Hills, CA 90210. Upon arrival, please park in the parking lot and walk over to the table outside our nursery to pick up your sapling.

After reserving your sapling, you will receive an email confirming your time slot and our address.

Things to know:

There is a one-sapling limit per Adoption Event. If you would like to apply for more you will be placed on a waitlist and notified if there are additional saplings available.

Saplings received through this adoption must get planted on private property, not in the area in front of your house between the sidewalk and the street/parkway. Otherwise, these trees will lift the sidewalk over time due to their size and exceed the height of any overhead wires.

Please do not attend this adoption if you have not submitted an order with TreePeople. We will have pre-ordered saplings at the event location only.

Reserve your sapling today!
